Derek Nelson is a new singer-songwriter from Chicago who began playing shows this year and has already drawn sizable crowds at noted Chicago clubs (Double Door) and garnered critical claim. At only his third show, he was described as "a force to be reckoned with" (SPIN).
Released only months after playing a concert, his debut EP, Something Obscure, combines his folk roots with a diverse and adventurous sonic landscape, and has been called "perfectly crafted" (Examiner) and "gently disarming" (RedEye). Something Obscure was recorded in Chicago, mixed at Smart Studios (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) and mastered at Sterling Sound (James Taylor, Coldplay). Now playing with a talented full band, live shows have been simultaneously called "rowdy," "energetic" and "introspective."
Daysleeper, the band, began to form two years ago when singer/songwriter, Patrick Gemkow, and jazz bassist, Alex Austin, started performing as an acoustic duo, including guitar and upright bass. As their repetoire and audience grew, Daysleeper was in need of a more powerful sound. After adding drummer Oliver Hunt, the band spent a short time as an all electric power trio. Presently, Daysleeper has found its unique voice by adding Brandon Thies on guitar and Evan Laflamme on saxophones. Daysleeper's music is an organic mix of rock, country and jazz, executed with a blend of electric and acoustic sounds, which create the perfect vehicle for Gemkow's powerful compositions and superb vocals. The world is sure to hear more from Daysleeper in the future. For now, the band continues to impress audiences and club owners at a number of venues in and around Chicago. As their popularity grows Daysleeper is sure to be an important and innovative part of the music community.
Overman is the unique result of four distinct voices and a myriad of styles that have congealed to form a unique musical identity, born from rock, blues, and folk. Their songs leave no human emotion unexplored and utilize many different genres to do so. With influences ranging from John Prine to The Velvet Underground to Lightnin' Hopkins, each song has it's own unique personality, yet fits seamlessly next to each other. Overman's live performances underline two basic principals: great music and good times. The band currently lives together in an 1865 farmhouse near Chicago as they record their first full-length album.
