A Collective, a Label.. a Cult?
Elephant 6 may be all of these things or none of these depending on your point of view. And we're certainly not going to try to define what it is now! But we'll give you a brief history and you can decide...
Elephant 6 began in the late 1980's in Ruston, Louisiana. A group of 4 high school friends, Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart and Jeff Mangum, started recording at home on boomboxes and 4-track cassette recorders. They traded these tapes with each other, making album artwork and liner notes, even if only one copy ever existed. Eventually, recording collaborations and bands formed from these friendships.
But it wasn't until 1991, after Robert Schneider had moved to Denver to attend the University of Boulder, that the collective got a logo. The Apples in Stereo were about to release their first 7" single and Robert asked Will Cullen Hart to draw a logo for their new label. Robert began selling cassette releases by mailorder including titles by Marbles, Sunshine Fix and Always Red Society. In June 1993, 500 copies of the Apples in Stereo - Tidal Wave EP were pressed, including a twelve-page booklet illustrated by Will Hart. This became the first record to be released by the Elephant 6 Recording Company.
Meanwhile, Jeff and Will had moved to Athens, Georgia and started a band called Synthetic Flying Machine (formerly known as Cranberry Lifecycle). Bill moved to Athens after playing on New York band Chocolate USA's second (and final) album, Smoke Machine and joined Synthetic Flying Machine, which eventually became The Olivia Tremor Control. California Demise was the Olivias' first and Elephant 6's second release. Jeff then left to roam the country and pursue Neutral Milk Hotel, his solo recording project which he had begun back in high school.
Fast forward into the late 1990's...
