There’s no point in trying to unearth an obvious “single” in Other Lives’ second album, Tamer Animals. Here’s a better idea instead: succumb. Let every last song wash over you like proper long players once did, from the swift strings and pulsating horns—a technique learned from old Philip Glass LPs—of “Dark Horse” to the richly orchestrated denouement of “Heading East,” a cut that could have been cribbed from the early instrumental sessions of Other Lives’ old band Kunek. “Every sound has a purpose without being too indulgent,” explains Tabish. “There’s nothing like, ‘Hey, let’s rock out on this!’ It’s homemade in a way. For better or for worse, it’s all our sound.” That sound amounts to one hell of a sweeping listen—an atmosphere, a mood, a state of mind. So while you might find yourself going back to the minor-key melodies of “Dust Bowl III” or the Morricone-caliber arrangements of “Old Statues” more often than not, it’s all part of a greater whole.

REGO grew up on a small farm in southeastern WI. She was always in love with the guitar. “Some of my early memories are sitting in my neighbor’s living room and watching him run over blues licks” she says. As she got older, her mother, a former concert cellist, encouraged her to study and play classical guitar and that’s what she did for most of her adolescence. n 2006 she moved to Chicago and recorded her first EP. Cutting her teeth in the fertile Chicago open mic scene, she slowly began to gain a voice and a following. Since then she has released two other records, the last of which, All These Bones And Us, sold out the famous Chicago venue Old Town School of Folk Music. This February, Seconds will be her second full band release. Seconds marks the fourth studio record for REGO since 2006. Moving in a new direction, the new record reveals a more mature and evolving set of songs.

"Algebro is the solo project of local singer/songwriter Thom Cathcart. At first glance you may take note of his handlebar mustache, dopey demeanor and terrible choice of band name. But don’t let all that fool you; Algebro is a witty songwriter - a master of subtle sarcasm and dark humor.

Cathcart originally hails from Gainesville, Georgia, so it’s no surprise his music comes with a hint of southern charm. His debut full-length, The Algebro Album, is an 11-song collection of strangely charismatic folk songs that are sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes cheerful, but never cheesy. Take a listen for yourself over at Algebro’s Bandcamp."

Brimming with confidence and creativity, Arrow sees Heartless Bastards pushing their distinctive sound forward with their most eclectic, energetic collection thus far. The album – the Austin, Texas-based band’s first release with Partisan Records – is marked as ever by singer/guitarist/songwriter Erika Wennerstrom’s remarkable voice, at turns primal and pleading, heartfelt and heroic. Songs like “Parted Ways” and the searing “Low Low Low” expertly capture the Bastards’ multi-dimensional rock in all its strength and spirit. Following upon the difficult introspection of 2009’s acclaimed third album, The Mountain, Arrow stands as a powerhouse new beginning for the Heartless Bastards.

“The Mountain was me going through some things after being in a relationship for nine years,” Wennerstrom says. “This album is kind of like me being comfortable again.”

Hawaiian Lion started as a trio between drummer John McNulty, bassist John Tom, and songwriter Christopher Rodriguez. Eventually they climbed to the top of the mountain and stared into the eyes of a mystical beast - Randy the Ram. Now a newly formed four piece band, Hawaiian Lion is hoping to tickle souls with a ten foot boom stand.

The shimmering sound of Sharon Van Etten’s Jagjaguwar debut album, Tramp, both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. Throughout the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Van Etten was without a home -- crashing with friends and storing her possessions between varied locations. The only constant in Van Etten's life during this time was spent in Aaron Dessner's garage studio. Tramp contains as much striking rock, as pious, minimal beauty; it can be as emotionally combative as it can sultry. Van Etten has traveled far, and if her displacement took an emotional toll, she offset those setbacks with a powerfully articulated vision. And so, once again, each listener will discover their own moments along the way, and the debates as to the best song start anew.

In 2005 the band hit the road... and they hit the road hard. Often dubbed "road warriors", SOJA has brought their unique sound and stage show to nearly every city in North America, as well as many cities throughout Europe, South America, the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean. With no signs of slowing down. SOJA is planning a world tour for 2011/2012 in support of their upcoming album release. There is no doubt about it. This band is on the forefront of a Revolution with hopes to bring about positive change: environmentally, politically and socially.

"Although the members of Stay Golden hail from Texas, Indiana and Illinois, the band have become a force on Chicago's pop-punk scene, thanks to local shows and gigs with groups such as Fireworks, The Graduate and You, Me, And Everyone We Know. Buoyed by the success of their self-released album, "Three Day Weekend" - which received plenty of positive feedback after hitting iTunes earlier this year - Stay Golden are already hoping to release a new record in early 2012."

In the last three years Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an outsider experimental teenage noise-maker to a full fledged internationally celebrated electronic pop musician. She has emerged as a figurehead—a self-produced, self-designed, self-taught independent woman. Nika however is a woman who can command a room, any room, without needing a band, a stage, or even a microphone. Her voice is unmistakable it cuts right to the core. Conatus is a huge leap forward in production, instrumentation and song structure. It says it all in the definition of the title: the will to keep on, to move forward. From thumping ballads to electronic glitch, no sound goes unexplored on her new record. It is an icy exploration in refined chaos and controlled madness, an effort to break through capability and access a sonic world that crumbles as it shines.

"Nothing about the popular “Show ‘N Tell Show” is obvious or remotely probable." -Chicago Tribune

Tribune: we agree. Against all probability, we've done the obvious. It's time for graphic design! Yep, Chicago’s first and only live design talk show is back for more. We still call it: The Show ‘n Tell Show. That’s cause it’s all about showing off Chicago’s finest creatives. Graphic Designers, fashionistas, photographers, comic book nerds, poster boys and improv comics: they’ve all been our guests for a lively evening of talk-show style banter, eye-popping slide shows and awkward hosting. The Tribune went on to call it: "A rollicking evening of boozy storytelling, one that happens to be centered on designers showcasing their failures, triumphs and triumphant failures."

We’ve put together a smashing line-up:

Letterform, the cutest couple by design
Paul Koob, the Hamster Man
The window-dressing INDO Girls
Photographer phenom Paul Octavius
and a very special surprise guest.

And of course, your bumbling hosts Michael Renaud, Zach Dodson, and the spokesmodel that is also your mom, SpokesMom. Our house band, Jay Jay and the JJ’s, a organ/drum combo forged from design boredom, will be back to rock some socks. If you remember last show's yoga-ballin', forty-chuggin', Big Bird-drawin' debacle, then you know what you're in for.

"The energy, however, was tremendous...The lyrics, which are worth paying attention to, brim with self-pity and heartache...But the backbeat is tight and the guitar heroics have just enough of a wink...Only 40 minutes into the festival, and the best part of the night is already over."
- Sterling Clover, Village Voice

"Few dudes could successfully accomplish a pop-forward album complete with such devastating hooks, auto-tune in all the strangest places, and even a rap verse, but Jack weaves this unique anthemic sensibility into an album that deserves to be sincerely appreciated… because how many of us could personally adapt our styles to a mainstream accessibility only to so sweetly flip that script and be a stronger person on the other side of it?"

After disbanding in the late 1980s, the various members of the Del Fuegos went on to lead remarkable second lives. In the New Year, however, all four original members of the acclaimed Boston quartet will come together for a 12-city tour of the Eastern Seaboard and Midwest. The Del Fuegos are among a handful of legendary rock and roll exports from Boston, Mass. Recording alongside X, the Blasters, Los Lobos, and others for L.A. ‘s Slash Records, the Del Fuegos burned brightly through the 1980s. They played more than 200 dates a year internationally and released albums that were consistently favorites of audiences and critics alike. Even before they released their first record, Rolling Stone named them a band to watch. Blame it on a wildly successful summer 2011 reunion show in Boston that sold out almost overnight, with extra shows added. Blame it on the audience reaction to this celebrated return. Blame it on the fact that the band came out hitting on all cylinders, somehow seeming younger than when we last saw them. Blame it on the fact that every member was able to get time away from his day job during the same two weeks. Blame it on the pure joy of elemental rock and roll.

Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They wanted a life of experience unmediated by people or things, a life of intimate participation with their environment. Cell phones, television, household appliances, the conveniences of modern life were traded for simplicity and contentment. A return to evenings spent indulging in the profound silence of the remotest regions, far from the yellowy glow of civilization.

The long way is the beautiful one. The hard way is the most rewarding. Two years after completing their 2500 nautical mile voyage, Riley and Moore’s experience has led them to seek out a new endeavor. Their music bears the mark of months spent alone with the sea and each other. It is tinged with the sweet affection of new lovers. It bears the uncluttered aesthetic of time spent in remote and uninhabited regions. Their music is a modest attempt to translate an old truth rediscovered. Their album will be released by Fat Possum in January 2011.

The Korean-American collective started when the three came together after having forged separate careers. Despite only working as a group for the past year, their movements have been monumental.

Eddie Shin became a phenomenon in Korea back in 2005 when his self-produced album Just My Way hit the ground running. The R&B-meets-KPop singer/songwriter has been writing songs since he was 16. Born in Boston, but raised in Korea, Eddie developed a multi-cultural understanding of music early on, one that has echoed throughout his entire career. Having studied music at NYU, Eddie Shin has even written and composed for other artists, while crafting the theme song “Let’s Go” for Korea’s G20 Summit. Flowsik earned his stripes on the New York City battlegrounds as an MC with the gruff voice yet stellar delivery. Mentored by none other than Ice-T, the Queens rapper even had the rap veteran on his track “Hate”. While navigating the city street music scene, Flowsik took his talents abroad, where K-Pop acceptance ran rampant, having Flow drop bars on songs from K-Pop acts like JYJ. As his U.S. Hip-Hop fan base swells, his lyricism only gets better and better. Nicky Lee has his roots in Los Angeles, but has earned undeniable achievements in the Korean market. The R&B/Soul singer became a fixture in the Asian music scene, having released five solo albums and won “Best Male Singer” in 2007 at the Mandarin Pop Music Awards known as the Golden Melody Awards. And golden melody he has, as Nicky provides a soulful touch to AZIATIX.

The glue that holds the group together is Jae Chong. The production guru had similar beginnings as AZIATIX, having started in the R&B group Solid. The group sold over four million albums; known as the first Korean R&B act to break the million albums sold mark. Jae composes scores for TV and film, while producing for other famed Korean acts like Coco Lee, Kim Gun Mo, Shin Seung Hoon, Stanley Huang, and Nicky Lee as a solo artist. The two met when Nicky was singing in church as a teenager.

With four power players and loads of talent, AZIATIX are geared for a worldwide takeover. Just shy of two years together, and their accomplishments are endless. They were the first Asian-American group featured on AOL, while MySpace, Windows Media, and MSN homepages all featured the group. Their YouTube page broke records with the most subscriptions (over 800,000) by a group, and their self-titled debut EP reached #4 on the iTunes R&B charts.

POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs' members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed into the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.
